As a borough and market town from early in the 13th century, Lechlade’s main function was as a staging post for goods and passenger traffic. By the 17th century a canal linked the River Thames and River Severn establishing Lechlade as an important inland port transporting a variety of goods as diverse as cheese, coal and Cotswold stone.

For a pleasant riverside walk, the Thames footpath can be gained via Halfpenny Bridge, the path leads through open fields to St John’s lock and a visitors’ centre. Just two miles from Lechlade is Buscot House and Park. A National Trust property, this beautiful neo-classical mansion has a fine art and furniture collection and is set in landscaped grounds.
